Sarah Hyndman took Type Tasting to the Ecole Intuit Lab, a design college in Mumbai, India, where she spent a week teaching typography to sixty second and third year students. This is the experience of the week in the words of the students: Neha Godambe, Ruchi Mehta, Shruti Vidyanand, Tvesha Shah and Zahra Dhuliawala.
Exciting and innovative Type Tasting events are planned for the London Design Festival with Bankside Design District. ‘Do You Judge a Wine by its Label?’ is an enlightening and enjoyable tasting evening that combines wine, design and science. Discover what the label tells you about a wine, and how it can even influence how it tastes (along with jolly nice Laithwaite’s wine). ‘What’s Your Type?’ workshops are bursting with fun games and demonstrations that teach you the personalities of typefaces and how to choose a font in three easy steps (no experience necessary). This will be hosted by Bedales in Borough Market.

The wine and type tasting evening has been created by innovative type expert Sarah Hyndman, founder of Type Tasting, and will be co-hosted by Grant Hedley the wine tasting expert (tough job) with Laithwaite’s. The event will be held in the beautiful Laithwaite’s Arch store. This family owned, independent wine merchant has been finding some of the most exciting and enjoyable wines in the world for the last 50 years.

Are we really that influenced by typography? Type specialist Sarah Hyndman seems to think so! And it looks like she made converts out of our students following her talk at Shillington. We had the unique opportunity of being part of Sarah’s ongoing psychological research for Oxford University, and through a series of sensory experiments we all learned a little bit more about both typography and ourselves.
The best experiments involve jellybeans, a lesson Sarah Hyndman was about to reveal. We were privileged to be a part of Sarah’s type tasting experiment, tasting chocolate, jellybeans and smelling fragrances while looking at different fonts to see if they affected our experiences. Our results will become part of the data for the Cross-modal Research Laboratory at Oxford University who are studying how different senses interact.

A glimpse of the Type Tasting at the V&A for the London Design Festival at the weekend in photos. Thank you to the team of brilliant volunteers and to everybody who came along and threw themselves into the games and experiments exploring the influence of different typefaces and fonts so wholeheartedly. We estimate around 500 of you visited during the two three-hour sessions and we now have lots of research data to tally up. Type Personality Game Show
The Type Tasting studio is full of jars of smells, sweets, mystery boxes to identify from the typefaces on the packaging, typographic memorabilia and puzzles. “Walking into the Type Tasting studio was like walking into a mad scientist’s lab” Robert Boick.
I’m looking forward to an exciting couple of weeks in Austin, Texas leaving next week. I’m honoured to be presenting a short talk on Saturday March 14th and then I get to spend the rest of the time being curious and inspired by the unfolding themes and ideas, many of which will be influencing us tomorrow. It’s an amazing event to be a part of so I’m delighted to be going back and it’s going to be great to meet up with the friends I made last time.
