Please join me for an evening as I present How to Draw Type and Influence People in my local bookshop over a glass of wine. This is a fantastic and welcoming independent bookshop in North London. Pull up a chair as I talk about the science of why drawing on paper is ‘magic’; show you that type isn’t just for experts and geeks; tell you what inspired me to fall in love with type; and share stories that will make you look at your font menu in a new light. Afterwards I’ll be signing books and answering your questions.

We had an amazing launch evening at Tate Modern a week ago, thank you all so much for coming along and to Laurence King Publishing. We filled the bookshop with experiments, games and giant sweets for everybody to explore as I mingled, signed books and talked about my typographic explorations. The Times printed a short piece with a first glimpse of experiment results from the evening, read this here. A list of all the recent press coverage is here.

Clever, insightful and original, Sarah left a lasting buzz and excitement behind her!” Charlotte Godfrey, BBC.

What does your choice of font say about your personality? Which typefaces you would date, ditch or be ‘just good friends’ with. Can a font make a product look expensive or change what it smells or tastes like?

We all constantly interact with type in almost every aspect of our lives. But how do fonts affect what we read and influence the choices we make? Sarah Hyndman opens up the incredible science and the magical art of how fonts influence us.

A fascinating insight into how type can influence our feelings, our senses, and even our taste” Professor Charles Spence, University of Oxford

Most books about fonts are written for designers, Sarah brings the power of fonts to everyone” Patrick Burgoyne, Creative Review

The challenge has been set: can I give a keynote talk on my subject without ever mentioning the words ‘font’, ‘typeface’ or ‘typography’?

Reading outside the lines
The world is full of words and these help us to navigate a course through our busy lives. However, all is not always as it seems, because we make judgements and assumptions that influence our experiences and our choices long before we read the words themselves.

Sarah will give insights into the ‘secret’ messages hidden in words that affect our every thought, feeling and even our behaviour. She will show that we instinctively understand these messages, but on a subconscious level, and how becoming consciously aware of them enables us to make smarter choices.

This is a fresh take on human responses; how we make sense of and interact with the world around us. The audience is invited to join in with lively games and demonstrations as they take part in the discovery process.

Since the launch in 2013 she’s curated an exhibition at the V&A for the London Design Festival, been interviewed on Radio 4’s Today, taken Type Tasting to South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and has been commissioned to write a book.

Sarah has been a graphic designer for over 15 years, working in agencies before setting up design company With Relish. After studying an MA in Typo/Graphics at the London College of Communication she was invited back as a guest tutor.

Sarah will share with us a story of type and invite us to consider our emotional response to the printed word. Each font/typeface has a personality that influences our interpretation of the words we read by evoking our emotions and setting the scene. We all understand this instinctively but it happens on a subconscious level. Sarah will show us that conscious awareness of the emotional life of fonts can be entertaining and ultimately give us more control over the decisions we make.
