‘CCTV’ by Miho Aishima
“When I first came to London it was really strange to see the cameras everywhere since I don’t think I’ve really seen anything like that in the States. Its funny how you get used to them quite quickly. I just think its fascinating how many beginnings and endings of people’s stories they must capture.”
Ashima is a London based designer/researcher who grew up in the USA.
‘Deconstructed’ by Gaynor Maher
Maher, who describes herself as “a jobbing designer” explains that “my first inspiration for this word was to use some typographical blocks I made last year. I was searching through the boxes in the garage & came across my son’s old lego which gave me the light bulb moment! I love the fact that a lot of the blocks had been chewed by him when a toddler.”
’24/7′ by Eugenie Smit
“Each letter represents something that is happening 24/7 in London including shopping, the nature to be found in the city’s wide open spaces, the social side of living here and the ongoing construction as the capital expands.”
Workshop at Cass Art Islington
Type Tasting went to Cass Art Islington, a perfect place to hold a workshop. Participants got away from the computer to get their hands dirty experimenting with typography and exploring its expressive qualities. We explored the topic of ‘creative London’ through typography, mark making and materials. The words created will be a part of Type Tasting with the London Design Festival at the V&A.
‘Design’ by Martin Cahill
“I wanted represent the whole design scene in London, from iconic figures such as Neville Brody and Vivienne Westwood to creative agencies such as Pentagram and NB Studio and to the individuals and students striving to make their mark on the London design landscape.”
‘#OMG’ by NB Studio for #LDF13
“When Type Tasting invited us to choose a word to answer ‘London=’ everyone in the studio had an opinion. After debating Type Tasting’s list of words, and what London meant to us, we eventually agreed on the very unlikely ‘#OMG’.
“To us ‘#OMG’ was one of the least descriptive words and not particularly inspiring … until we started to think about what it actually stood for. We realised it could be a celebration of London’s rich multiculturalism and a nod to the importance of social media.”
‘Everybody’ by Lucy Parris
“I knew I wanted to create a piece where the typography works as an image in itself, so I wanted to illustrate my thoughts and feelings on my chosen word, ‘everybody’.”

‘Diverse’ by Michael Attenborough
‘Diverse’ is a perfect word both for creative London, and to describe Attenborough’s work—from the range of productions he champions in his role as theatre director, to the scope of his directorial work.
Michael Attenborough is a talented and prolific English theatre director. He was the Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre in London from 2002 until earlier this year when he stepped down to concentrate on his directing career. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to the theatre.
‘Transmitted’ by Julieta Hernandez
“I picked transmission as it immediately made me think about the piece of the Atlantic Telegraph Line that is at the Faraday Museum, which represents in a way one of the things I love most about London and Britain in general, homeland to great scientists and inventions that have changed our world.”
