‘Photographed’ by Deborah Clerkin
“I chose the word ‘Photographed’ as it is one of my greatest passions. As a photographer images are very important to me, capturing moments that become lasting and loved memories. Photography has evolved over the years. From traditional 35 mm film, digital SLR’s and compacts to mobile phones utilising apps like Instagram, photography is accessible to almost anyone in many ways.”
“To create my word I travelled across London to some of the most popular and photographed sights. Despite living so close to London there are some places I have never taken the time to explore up close. Using this opportunity I had a fantastic time taking in my surroundings and looking at things from different perspectives. Photography is a great way to broaden your horizons and one of the many reasons why I love it.”
“In my piece I wanted to portray modern photography with crisp, clean images making use of modern techniques. However I also love the more traditional process of film, which has a much more involved process to reach the end result and produces varied yet unique results with each shot. Sometimes the small imperfections can really add to the atmosphere of a photograph. Whilst digital photography leads the way I wanted to portray that traditional ways still hold a place today and that they can work together to create interesting pieces. I used a simple typeface to ensure the photographs and film stood out on their own and to avoid the word appearing too busy and complicated.”
“By delicately stitching on the negatives and creating the cut out shutter I wanted to make the piece a little more fun and interactive, looking through the film to see the shots captured and peeling back the flaps to reveal what’s hidden underneath. To encourage people to look at images in a different way.”
